![]() ![]() If this is you, you might want to read my article comparing the RAW and JPEG formats for photography. Some people prefer or need the convenience of the JPEG format and the challenge of getting the image right in the camera. And if you compare the level of control available in-camera (for recording JPEG images), the typical RAW converter is infinitely superior.īut all this power and control provided by shooting in RAW format is only valuable if you need or use it. The benefit this gives is that YOU make the processing decisions, not the camera. In contrast, capturing the image in RAW format records all the sensor data as a RAW file. After processing the sensor data into a JPEG image, the rest of the data’s discarded. Typically, you can set the Contrast, Sharpness, Saturation and film simulation used but your control is very limited. It does this based on the camera software and a few settings you can change. It automatically makes decisions about the black and white point in the image as well as many other critical things. In JPEG recording, the camera’s internal processor takes care of converting the RAW data from the sensor. ![]() One is the JPEG format and the other is the RAW format. This is how the image is stored and depending on the camera you’re using there are usually a couple of formats you can use. The camera then saves the information captured by the sensor to the memory card. The sensor contains photoreceptors that capture the image, producing the pixels. When photographing with a digital camera, the camera lens focusses the image onto the camera sensor. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can load thicker stock there but you are tempting fate in terms of surface roughing and perhaps even jamming for thicker stock, such as cotton rag and so-called “fine art” papers (like Epson’s Velvet Fine Art), you are limited to single feed work through the front. There is a front and stack load type feeder, although stacking is practically limited to those papers rated at or below about 240 gsm, or standard printing paper. This 13” printer can handle all sorts of surfaces and weights, print on CDs, and even be set up to work wirelessly within your home or studio network. ![]() There is auto-switching of black inks with both matte and photo black on board I timed a switch and it took about 9 minutes the first time I did it. The printer offers two grays (light and “light, light”) and a matte and glossy black, making it a nice three-grayscale set for each surface. When you work with an Epson printer of this class you get to use Epson’s Advanced B&W mode and the Epson inks, to me one of the best combos in the business for making neutral, warm, or cool exhibition-quality prints. There are nine inks in all, with Epson’s UltraChrome K3 ink technology, a leading pigment-ink offering. The ink carts have a much higher capacity than the amateur Epson models (25.9 ml for the R3000) but are smaller than those available in pro models. The printer could be said to span the pro/amateur ranking, much like some D-SLRs these days. Failure to do so will block the Advanced B&W mode in the Print Setup dialog box. ![]() ![]() When you want to use Epson’s excellent Advanced B&W mode choose Printer as the handler. For most work, and when you want to use specific paper profiles, choose Photoshop as the option under Color Handling. When you open the Print dialog box you begin by choosing whether the printer or Photoshop will manage color. ![]() ![]() ![]() Display resolution: 800×600 minimum requirement.Graphics: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver. ![]() Hard drive: 32GB clean install or new PC (16 GB for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit existing installation).RAM: 1GB requirement for 32-bit or 2GB for 64-bit.Processor: 1GHz or faster CPU or System on a Chip (SoC).If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7, the computer must meet the minimum system requirements: (If you prefer to upgrade by performing a clean installation, then follow these step-by-step instructions.) You can’t upgrade them yourself these days, therefore you’re stuck with whatever you buy from the outset. It’s particularly important advice now that Macs are essentially sealed boxes. And for as long as I can remember, the advice has always been, “buy as much RAM as you can afford”. You see, as game-changing as the M1 might be, it still relies on the basic principles of computing. This is where we take a step back to the old way of thinking. After all, if the performance is all but identical until you reach into the upper echelons of creative or development work, is it really worth your hard-earned? You may now be wondering why on earth you’d ever bother spending the extra cash on 16GB of RAM. ![]() But I really do put them to task, and I feel I’ve experienced both the 8GB and 16GB variants for long enough now to offer you the best buying advice for the 24” iMac. I don’t throw development work at my M1 Macs. The only time I’ve ever spotted the 8GB struggling was during a particularly complicated 4K timeline in Final Cut Pro. No, really for everyday computing tasks and even photo editing, they perform identically. I can’t tell the difference between either version of the M1. The former rests in my MacBook Air, while the latter sits in my Mac mini, which is my default video and audio editing rig. As noted, I use both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the M1 every single day. In a world where you can still buy a 16” MacBook Pro that can be configured with 64GB of RAM, the M1 appears ludicrously underpowered. What gets their goat the most, however, is the fact the M1 maxes out at 16GB of RAM. To them, it’s a toy, far too new to be reliable and incompatible with all but the most dumbed-down apps and platforms. Some people continue to scoff at Apple silicon. Every single day, it helps me run my business, smash my to-do list and ensure my videos and blogs are published on time and in the best possible shape.
